KDE 4.2 בעברית

לקראת השיחרור הקרוב של KDE 4.2 בסוף ינואר, אני רוצה להציג כאן איך KDE 4.2 נראה עם תרגום עברי. להזכירכם, התרגום יהיה רשמי והוא יופץ ביום השיחרור.

שולחן העבודה של plasma בעברית

חלק מהשינויים שנעשו בתרגום, שהחל עם השיחרור של KDE 4.1:

  • המטרה שלנו הייתה לתרגם את kdelibs, ו־kdebase לרמה של 90% ומעלה עד לשיחרור של KDE 4.2. בסוף החלטנו לעלות את הרף ל־95%, וגם להוסיף את kdemultimedia.
  • כל המחרוזות נבדקו. המחרוזות ההמתורגמות, הלא מתורגמות וה־fuzzy.
  • ניסינו כמה “פי’צרים מתוכחמים” של bidi, למשל LRM, RLM וכמובן שימוש במקף־כתף

    דפדפן הרשת Konqueror תרגום – ועדיין תומך בתקנים החדשים של w3c

  • כאשר יש ספק בתרגום של מילה, וניקוד עוזר למשתמש להבין את התרגום – המילה נוקדה
  • שמות של אנשים לא תורגמו כלל, כיוון שבחלק מהמיקרים אין לנו אפשרות לנחש נכון איך השם מבוטא, ואיך לשכתב אותו בעברית.
  • שמות מסחריים נשארו באנגלית – אלא אם כן החברה פרסמה שם מקביל בעברית (למשל OpenOffice.org מפותח על ידי סאן־מיקרוסיסטמס לפי חלון ה”אודות” שלהם).
  • היו כמה שינויים במינוח:
    • ביטוי סדיר שונה לביטוי רגולרי. התרגום הקודם לא עבר את מבחן גוגל (המונח לא מוכר), באקדמיה המונח לא מוכר כלל, ואנשים לא ממש מבינים למה הכוונה.
    • שינוי מ”כרטיסייה” ל”לשונית” כדי להתאים יותר לגנום ומוזילה
    • יחידות מדידה של מחשבים (kb, mb, gb וכו’ ) שוכתבו בעברית, שפי שפרוייקט מוזילה עושים: ק”ב, מ”ב וג”ב. אם זה מספיק טוב עבורם, זה מספיק טוב עבורינו.
    • ניסיתי להשתמש במונח “מכתבה” שהאקדמיה העברית המליצה עליו. המונח מתאר את ה־dashboard. למי שלא מכיר, מה שיושב על הרקע (דרך אגב, לזה האקדמיה התכוונו אם אני מבין נכון, זאת ה”מכתבה” ) הוא dashboard וגם אפשר להעלות אותו מעל לחלונות הפעילים.
  • כמה מהפקדים תוקנו כדי להיות במצב שמאל־ימין גם בעברית, בעיקר פקדים שמציגים קבצים, ושורת הכתובת ב־konqueror

יישומים חדשים כמו systemsettings תורגמו

למרות זאת, יש עדיין כמה בעיות:

  • חלק גדול משאר היישומים עדיין לא תורגם. אחת המטרות לגרסה הבאה (KDE 4.3) היא לתרגם את kdepim ו־kdegraphics.
  • kate עדיין לא תומך בעברית בצורה מושלמת – תנועת הסמן לא נכונה, וכמו כן אין אפשרות לקבוע את כיוון הפסקה בצורה ידנית.
  • plasma שבור אם משתמשים ב־Qt4. הסיבה נעוצה ב־QGraphicsView שלא יודע להפוך את הממשק של הפקדים במצב עברי. הבעייה ידוע לנוקיה/QtSoftware והובטח תיקון עבור Qt 4.5. זה עדיין לא נבדק על גרסאות Technology previews של Qt 4.5.
  • בטח יש עוד 🙂

הגרסה הרשמית אמורה להשתחרר בסוף ינואר, והיא תיכנס למחזור ההפצות הבא.

שוחררה ביטא שנייה של KDE 4.2

היום ה־18 לדצמבר שוחררה גרסת ביטא שנייה של KDE 4.2. זאת הגרסה הראשונה של KDE 4.2 הכוללת תרגום עברי מובנה, ולכן אותי זה משמח מאוד.

הצוות של KDE ישראל עבד בחצי השנה האחרונה קשה כדי לקבל אור ירוק ולהיכלל ברשימת השפות הנתמכות באופן רשמי על ידי KDE. אני אסקור את סביבת העבודה בפוסטים הבאים ואני אנסה להסביר חלק מהתיקונים שנעשו שם. כמו כן, אני אסקור בעיות ידועות, ואת כוונות הצוות בעתיד. מצב התרגום של KDE 4.2 זמין בכתובת הבאה: http://l10n.kde.org/stats/gui/trunk-kde4/team/he/

כולי תקווה שבחצי שנה הקרובה רב ההפצות הגדולות יטמיעו את KDE 4.2 ומשתמשים יכלו לקבל דסקטופ עברי מלא מבוסס KDE 4 בתוך חצי שנה.

חדשות מהחזית של Qt 4.5 ו-KDE 4.2

בקרוב נוקיה ישחררו את Qt 4.5. בשלבים אלו זה נמצא בשלבי בדיקה מאסיבים, ופה מגיע השלב שבאמת מבינים כמה KDE עושים טובה ל-Trolltech/Nokia שהם משתמשים במוצר שלהם. הדרך הכי טובה לבדוק האם Qt4.5 יציבה ובאמת “תומכת אחורה” היא לבדוק אותה לייב על המחשב של המפתחים – בעזרת KDE 4 מומלץ לקרא מפי המתפתחים אודות הנושא הזה

בנוסף לשיפורים בביצועים (זה יראה יותר בתחום של פלסמה), יהיו עוד כמה עדכונים:

  • שיפור התמיכה ב-WebKit (אני מנחש שבגרסה 4.3 של KDE יהיה אפשר לבחור באיזה מנוע להשתמש ב-Konqeuror: ב-KHTML הישן והטוב או ב-QtWebKit.
  • נוספו אפשרויות benchmark יותר טובות לספרייה. הפוסט הבא מציג את הנושאר ומאוד מומלץ לקריאה.
  • שיפור ענק בכל הנושא של תמיכה בתלת מימד. בפוסט הבא מציגים דמו של מנוע תחת מימדי המזכיר את Wolfenstein אבל כתוב כולו ב-Qt4. מה שמאוד מטורף פה, זה שבמבוכים, בקירות הם דוחפים widgets רגילים כולל נגן מדיה רגיל ודפדפן אינטרנט והפתיחה של הדלתות נעשה על ידי לחיצה על QPushButton פשוט. שוב, מאוד הזוי אבל מציג את הגמישות של הספרייה.

יש גם סרטון מלא ב-you tube

בסרטון יש חלק שלא ממש מובן,שבו עומדים מול המסך ויש קצת קוד. הקוד הזה הוא מגדיר את ההתנהגות של החייל – פשוט משנים את הקוד ב-JavaScript וההתנהגות של החייל משתנה בהתאם.

והינה גם כמה חדשות בנושא KDE 4:

ולסיום, התחרות של QtCentre נערכה השנה ופורסמו שמות הזוכים (לא, השנה לא זכיתי במקום ראשון… בטח כי לא שלחתי שום דבר…).

החלטתי לחזור למתכונת המקורית של הבלוג ולפרסם פה מוסיקה שאני מוצא ב-youtube או מקומות אחרים. הרעיון שהיה מאחורי זה הוא שאפשר להנות מאומנות גם בלינוקס, וזה לא הכל תכנות או ssh/console וגם לנסות להביא אנשים בעלי אורינטציה יותר … “גרפית” … פעם קודמת שבדקתי swfdec הצליח להתמודד עם youtube ולכן גם לקנאים שמשתמשים אך ורק בתוכנה חופשית אין ממש תירוץ שלא לצרוך מוסיקה איכותית. (האמת היה עדכון של הנגן פלאש של youtube וצריך לברר האם swfdec שמגיע עם אובונטו יודע להתמודד איתו).

Porting Firefox to Qt…?

After reading Zack’s blog about the Mozilla port to Qt, I started thinking (warning, this is a very idiotic idea)… lets remember what Zack said: Qt is a toolkit, Mozilla has its own toolkit, Qt has networking library, Mozilla has a networking library, Qt has a JS engine, Mozilla has a JS engine, Qt comes with QtWebKit…

 

How about writing a XUL engine using Qt4 and WebKit…? and then porting Firefox to the new XUL/Qt engine…? This will give us a Firefox based on WebKit and pure Qt4 instead of the gecko mish-mash that’s available upstream for using Qt4 as a widget toolkit.

Sometimes the translation makes the product

I have just recently (2 years ago) finished to read The Lord Of The Rings. It was a huge task (I read the whole 6 books + history + languages + …) specially since I read the English version. So, now I have to move to the next challenge, and it seems the Dune books are a good idea.

Only this time, people suggested I read the Hebrew translation and not the native English version. It seems the pseudo Arabic using in the books (1) gets translated really well from English to Hebrew. And really, the books felt to me like they were written in Hebrew and not translated to Hebrew (even tough the 3rd and 4th books are a mess, as they contain bad translations and printing errors (2)). I assume it felt more natural for me then reading the English version.

This means that the translator did a good job: some of the spelling errors available in the English version were fixed in Hebrew version – and that made the book easier to read, well at least to me (3).

The same happens in computers. Most people in Israel are used to Windows English users interfaces, and when they see a Windows Hebrew users interfaces, they run away – because the UI is made in such an ugly way. One of the examples, is the light source which comes from right-to-bottom instead from left-to-bottom in RTL windows. But hey! You can have LTR and RTL windows in the same desktop, so you will see the light source coming from different locations in different windows! It’s even funnier when you try to close a window and the close button is in different locations in different windows, on Hebrew/RTL windows the close button is on the left of the window title! Thankfully KDE3 behaves better, and I am very happy about the way it looks and fells. Now what about KDE4?

This week I sat down and compiled KDE4/trunk for the first time, in hope to improve the Hebrew support in KDE4. I hope to get the translation of KDE 4.2 in good shape to be officially released as an official language (Hebrew is missing in KDE 4.0, and KDE 4.1, for the first time since KDE 1.1.4!). The problem is that many applications are really borked under Qt4 (4), and I am shifted aside to many small tasks. I will blog about them in the next days/weeks, for the other developers to see how can they code more “right-to-left” friendly (5).

So this is a note all to the KDE developers: if you are maintaining an application and got some ugly RTL/BiDi bug report and you don’t even understand what the user is complaining about, please send me an email and then assign the bug to me. Please mention module, file, class and if possible lines to fix. My email is “elcuco” (I assume you can guess the rest (6)). Ah… and in case you missed it: my name is Diego and I am one of the KDE developers which is making KDE usable for right-to-left users.

 

(1) I found real Arabic in the 3rd book, but the 1st and 2nd books did not really contained real Arabic as far as I can tell. But what do I know about Arabic? I only learned it at high school 😉
(2) Local publisher fault, really.
(3) Not the 4th one, all I see is Leto bla-bla-ing about that GoldenPath and other mambo-jambo. Boring! SHUT UP WORM!
(4) Plasma is the worst as the graphics scene layout system does not support setLayoutDirection( Qt::RightToLeft). I talked with el presidente about it a few months ago, and worst case scenario I can write a special layout class for plasma. Hope the Trolls/Nokia/QtSoftware will fix this issue before I do.
(5) Actually KDE folks really kick ass in this area – they are sometimes abusing this issue. More on that in the future.

QHOCR updates

I am maintaining (writing … ) an application based on libHOCR (an Hebrew OCR library) in Qt4 called QHOCR. The project started as a test for my abilities to port a Linux/GTK only application to Qt4/Windows. The last version I released was based on version 0.8.3 of Kobi’s library, and since then he did a lot up upgrades to the library – and now I need to port the application to the new API provided by the new library (stable API/ABI is for sissies).

So, the first thing I did, was compile the command line application using qmake. Now, this application is compiled right now using auto*, and links to GLib, so it was fun. Took 2 hours, but then I got the new (qmake based) binary to run exactly like the original (autohell based) one. Funny thing is that after stripping the new binary was 10k smaller then the old one, so go figure…

One interesting bug I found, is that both the library and the demo/command line application have a file named hocr.c. Now, since I am hacking an application – I don’t care about libraries and all this other issues, I just statically link all *.c files into the same EXE. Now, the problem is that you cannot have 2 files with the same name on the same project file (if both files are on different directories). That is because for both files, the target will be .tmp/hocr.o, and only one will be built. The solution is to rename one of the files, in my case the one which contains main(), to qhocr-cli.c.

Another interesting thing I did, is having 2 different *.pro files on the same directory. In theory I should use the subdirs template, but there is no reason why not to abuse this hack meanwhile.

The next stage will be get rid of all GLib/GTK function calls, and use cout(), and QString internally in the command line application to understand the API. Tomorrow I will be focusing on porting the command line parsing from GLib to Qt4 (somehow, don’t know how). The last stage will be migrating the GUI application to use the new library with all the experience gained from previous tests done on the command line utility.

The code is available in my trunk, and contains the GUI which links to libhocr-0.8 and the CLI application which links to libhocr0.10 (and glib! and x11!).

PS: yes, qmake can build plain C applications… I have used it once to build a GLUT based application since I am too stupid to learn auto* and CMake was not existing back then.

Microsoft, Israel, OpenSource (and Konversation)

Microsoft Israel has launched a site, in wich users can choose the translation of Windows/Office. Interesting, but read only without an MSNLive ID (or whatever it’s called today). Very cool IMHO: http://members.microsoft.com/wincg/mtcf_home.aspx?langid=1422&cult=he-il

Microsoft, is sponsoring (paying money!, see banner on the left) to organize the anual Linux convention in Israel, called August Penguin 2008. They will also have a lecture about OpenSource at Microsoft. If you don’t beleave me, look for מייקרוסופט (the Hebrew transcript of Microsoft) in this page: http://august.penguin.org.il/

On a personal note, I started working on Konversation‘s translation for version 1.1 to be released the next month. I started abusing the BiDi control characters (RLM, LRE and others). Now there are a few details which look better. Once again, I would like to thank the GEdit folks: I have been using this editor for this task. Hopefully in 2 months I will have time to move to KDE 4.2 trunk and fix KDE’s Hebrew support…

A few weeks ago Opera released their version latest version (9.5.0 back then, now at 9.5.1) of their desktop browser. As a huge fan of OperaMini on my Nokia phone I downloaded and tested it. And it's really a good browser, which some huge advantages, like the speed dial, the responsiveness of the GUI the gadgets (I have fishies!), the dock icon makes me run the same same instance for weeks, the standards compliance (my browser here gets 83, not 100 but still much more then all other browsers), the idea that you can search a piece of selected text… and more. I mean much more… like that crappy small package is packaged with RSS reader, a Mail client, an IRC client… and I probably missed a feature or 5… and it looks great…. this is really a visually nice GUI. I changed the theme to a Tango based theme, but still the default GUI is nice!

However, after using it for several weeks I have to revert back to using Firefox. It's not because of web standards, but it's because they don't mean a lot in real life, sadly. It seems Joel was right (1), and the most important thing is how they are implemented – which means once more you need to test your site on all browsers available, and testing the syntax against the W3C test application is not enough.

For example, on a site I visit I see some elements outside of a div, which not hapenning on IE*, Konqueror, Firefox… on another site which uses CSS to layout the main page the left columns is pushed down. And then we get to site designed to work on Firerox…

One nice example is GMail which is set to work on specific browsers. Then we get to Flash (youtube does not work on Opera/Mandriva 2008.1, and again some other random flashes do not work …). Also the richtext editor of WordPress does not work on Opera. Even the plain text editor of Opera is really unpredictable on BiDi texts (how the hell did they mess up QTextEdit3…?).

 

(1) I hope this will not be true in future. The acid test are cool, but we need a large, I mean 10,000-500,000 tests which browsers need pass before they are called "standard browsers" (2).

(2) We have this for pages, the W3C validator, but we need this also for web browsers.

Linux in the wild world

so.. I was talking with my Algebra professor, and I was like “and if I need to contact you?” and he is “this is my email, but you can see it on the site as well” and I was “yes, but the site stinks and usually it does not work” and he responds “and it even does not work on Firefox!” to which I responded “Yes, tell me about it, I don’t use Window at home to visiting the site is a pain for me”.

Now I learned something new: he installed Ubuntu on his home (or office, I memory sux balls…). Why? You see he told me he needs to write math documents. Using MS-Word, Hebrew, Math and linking the documents – just kills MS-Word. So he uses LaTeX, and on Windows there is no usable BiDi enabled text editor for LaTeX. So, under Ubuntu he uses GEdit, and it kicks ass.

So to sum things up: gedit: you kick ass, Ubuntu: you kick ass, LaTeX: you kick ass

This means bad things for me, since:
1) Gnome sux0rz, KDE ownz
2) I need to finish Kate BiDi support (it’s unacceptable that GEdit is better then Kate)
3) Mandriva kicks Ubuntu’s ass
4) Kate kicks ass

Konqueror 3 + GMail = love?

I am running here Mandriva 2008.1 with KDE 3.5.9, and I have set up Konqueror to idenitify as Mozilla 1.7.3 on Windows XP and now GMail works. I don’t think the chat works, but everything else seems to work. It is the old interface (no cool labels), but it does work!

Google reader is not working perfectly as well (I did not change the identification there). One of the problems is scrolling with the mouse wheel. It seems that they use an iframe, and the top frame is eating the events instead of propageting it to the internal iframe. I am seeing this on other sites. Also pressing “n” to move to the next article is not working, but space works as expected. Funny.

… and that’s the obsolete Konqueror on KDE3! now I really want to re-compile KDE4 and test Konqueror 4.1! If anyone wants to open bugs on Konqueror4, go for it. IMHO opening against KDE3 is not smart.
